Get Started

Back to the Basics: The Elastomer & The Adhesive

In 1956, we commercialized a Chemlok primer and covercoat system that produced elastomer tearing bonds. This jump in technology provided a broad processing latitude for elastomer rubber-to-metal bonding and drastically reduced scrap levels. We continue to innovate and add to our growing line of elastomer bonding formulations to accommodate all commercially available elastomers, diverse metals and rigid plastic substrates. When bonding rubber, there are many considerations, including your elastomer or elastomer blend, physical properties and part design.

Water-Based Adhesives & Solvent-Based Adhesives

From substrate surface preparation to storing adhesives correctly, we have all the tips and recommendations for using both water- (aqueous) and solvent-based rubber bonding Chemlok adhesives.

Specialty Rubber Needs

We're here to support your specialty adhesive needs, whether it be enhancing your supply chain or developing new products. With our flexible manufacturing capabilities and technical expertise, we're able to produce a wide range of products to ensure we meet your business needs.

Have a question about Chemlok adhesives? We might have already answered it. Check out our FAQs on rubber bonding.
Adhesion is affected by the choice of adhesive system, the choice and level of the antiozonant, and by the choice of cure system in the rubber compound.
Good primary adhesion can't be used to predict the environmental resistance of the bond.

Application Highlights

Belt bonding adhesives that can withstand high temperatures and harsh environments.
Tire solutions that can bond spikes, studs, rubber labels and much more.
Chemlok Adhesives are continuously improving to address the ever-growing challenges faced by rubber-to-metal molders. Two of those challenges are pre-bake resistance and mold-fouling. Learn more about our new adhesives that are facing these challenges and being tested against the WDK guideline.

Lead-Free Rubber-to-Substrate Adhesives

In the late 1980s, the North American automotive industry initiated the use of low-lead adhesives. This movement gained momentum in the 2000s and the industry was nearly no-lead. Other major industries like industrial and energy are making strides towards no-lead adhesives. For more than two decades, we've supplied proven, no-lead Chemlok adhesives into these industries. Customers in the Americas, Asia and Europe continue to successfully make the switch to no-lead adhesives.  As part of the transition, our teams collaborate with customers in converting them to new solutions, while also working to improve their process efficiencies. Our latest no-lead adhesives incorporate new chemistries that increase pre-bake resistance (Chemlok 6224) and mold-fouling resistance (Chemlok 6271).  We’ll complete our transition to lead-free Chemlok adhesives by the end of 2020. Talk with one of our experts to confidently make the switch.
